AUC Graduation Party

Last night I went to the American University of Cairo graduation party, which was really fun and interesting. a couple of things i noticed:

-this party was a view at the upper class egyptian culture. It took place at a big villa outside of Cairo, it was along the banks of the Nile and had a beautiful view. AUC is made up of the wealthiest egyptians in Egypt for the most part, so they are very different than the rest of the country. for example, the people were dressed in a european/american way, and the girls especially were less conservative than normal. it looked like a typical club atomsphere in the US, where they wore sexy/revealing clothes...this is not the norm here in egypt.

-the party had an open bar, it costed about $20 to get in, and the alcohol was pretty horrible. It was an egyptian produced vodka, and they had heineken beer but it tasted nasty as well for some reason. It started at about 12am and ended about 4:30-5am. By the end, all the guys were getting into mini fights because they were pretty beligerant. really they weren't fighting because everytime two people started to fight a million other people crowded around and kept the people away from eachother, so i didn't see any actual punches thrown. so this kept on happening and things got to be hectic, so we eventually left. It was pretty funny/sad watching people leave the party because there were an excess amount of people who were too drunk and stumbling out. from what i could tell, this was because egyptians don't drink often and this was the first time many people got drunk or the 2nd or 3rd time - so they don't know how to handle their liquor, to say the least. that also added to the problem of guys getting in fights towards the end.

a bunch of the AIESEC trainees went and it was really fun for us because we haven't gone out to dance or anything yet. We had a BLAST dancing and having a couple of the nasty coctails, and it was a good chance to let out some energy. I'd like to go out once in a while to some of the clubs here cause I really miss that, i really love to go out to dance!!! it's something that i can't live without.

  • Hey, when/if you buy your own alcohol: Just stay with Meister Max Beer, its not that good, but its not bad, and it has the best price/alcohol ratio.

Also, if you have friends coming in, make sure that they bring a couple liters of the good stuff, for, you know, special occasions.
