Weekend in Alexandria
This last weekend, I went to two places outside of Cairo. The first place we went to was the Suez Canal and Bitter Lake, in a city named Fayid, which is near the city of Ismalia. I went with my roomates Jacek, Brennan and our good friend Seif, who has a house there. It was really fun, we saw all the HUGE ships that were lined up passing through the canal, although they were pretty far away. The water was piss warm, especially at the shore, but we took a little row boat out and swam in the deeper water where it was cooler. We were gonna row to this island of sand but that was way far out and we had a shitty little row boat so it wouldn't have worked.
That was thursday night and friday, so friday night we drove back to Cairo to get the train to Alexandria. Thanks God Seif was with us because the train station there is pretty confusing, so he helped us get on the correct train and we were off to Alexandria. When we arrived friday night, it was not too impressive, we were makin fun of how everyone made it out to be amazing when really it wasn't much different than cairo and perhaps dirtier. So after eating, we called our friend Rachel (another aiesec trainee from GW), who proceeded to give us the worst directions ever to get to her place. So we got in a cab and went for like a good half hour and we ended up getting completely lost. Rachel managed to get one of the AIESECers to come pick us up and take a cab with us to her place, thanks be to God! HAHA anyways, Rachel is cool though cause she let us stay at her place for free, and then the next day in Alex was beautiful. We woke up around noon and went to a beach called Venezia, in a place called Montazah. That is where the Egyptian President Mubarach has his palace on the sea. We could only see it but it was pretty breathtaking. The whole place reminded me of the opening scene from the movie Alexander, where they have the famous Greek poet telling the story of Alexander while he's standing at his ocean front house in Alexandria, Egypt.
I didn't get to see much of the city, but the beach was beautiful green water, my first experience of the Mediterranean. I hope to be back for more :)
